A CHINESE HETIAN JADE WARRIOR Dimensions: Height 9 cm Wide 8 cm Depth 5 cm Weight: 322 grams An elegant Chinese Hetian jade carving of a warrior or courtly attendant, worked in pale celadon-green stone with warm creamy inclusions. The figure adopts a compact seated or kneeling posture, framed by broad flowing draperies and a prominent headdress, while the softly rounded limbs and ornaments are brought into focus by deep undercutting. The carver has used the natural colour differences within the jade to create contrasting forms and enhance the composition's sculptural movement. Hetian jade from the Xinjiang region has long been treasured in China for its luminous appearance and fine carving qualities. The intimate scale, smooth polished surfaces and animated openwork make this warrior figure an attractive Chinese hardstone sculpture.
