464 - THE SUPREME GODDESS DEPICTED AS A VOID BRONZE INDIA 18TH CENTURY

Auction ended

THE SUPREME GODDESS DEPICTED AS A VOID BRONZE INDIA 18TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 17,3 cm Wide 10 cm Depth 7 cm Weight: 499 grams An unusual bronze shrine in which the deity is represented not by a fully modelled body but by an intentionally empty rectangular field. The void is framed by a tall architectural surround with a domed upper section and finial, while two large hands project from the sides at approximately shoulder height. Smaller projecting elements descend from the upper frame and broad ornamental forms flank the opening. The dark bronze surface is worn and mottled with brown and green oxidation. Such an image is visually arresting because it reverses the normal logic of sacred sculpture: instead of giving divine presence a body, the artist makes emptiness itself the focus. The hands and shrine structure establish the expectation of a figure, while the vacant centre refuses to complete it. That tension between presence and absence gives the object much of its power. The viewer is drawn repeatedly to the open space, which becomes more active than any solid figure might have been. As a piece of Indian devotional bronze, it is compelling not because of dense figural detail but because of its conceptual economy: architecture, gesture and void combine to suggest a divinity that exceeds ordinary representation.
