COURTLY GARDEN SCENE , QIU YING (CIRCA 1498-1552) Dimensions: 53 cm x 66 cm A painted courtly scene arranged within a rectangular pictorial field on a hanging mount. Architectural elements and figures occupy a garden setting beneath dark, spreading trees, the forms picked out in fine lines and restrained colour against a warmly toned ground. The composition is compact and carefully balanced, with the surrounding mount lending the small scene the visual presence of a larger scroll. Garden pavilions and gatherings of elegantly dressed figures offered Chinese painters a means of evoking leisure, refinement and the world of literary imagination.
