GRAPEVINES AND CLUSTERS OF GRAPES , QI BAI SHI (1864-1957) Dimensions: 106 cm x 34 cm A hanging scroll painted in ink and light colour, depicting luxuriant grapevines with heavy clusters of grapes cascading among broad leaves and curling tendrils. Sweeping, calligraphic brushwork and dense washes of black and brown are set against softly tinted fruit, while the vertical inscription and red seals provide a strong counterpoint along the left side of the composition. Grapes were also an auspicious motif in Chinese painting, their abundant clustered fruit carrying associations of prosperity and numerous descendants. Here the subject is conveyed through rhythm, ink density and brush pressure rather than strict botanical description, giving the image a spontaneous and animated presence.
