458 - A CHINESE JADE HUANG PLAQUE WITH HUMAN FACES

A CHINESE JADE HUANG PLAQUE WITH HUMAN FACES Dimensions: Height 6 cm Wide 7,5 cm Depth 0,5 cm Weight: 29,7 grams A Chinese jade huang plaque of graceful U-shaped outline, with the two terminals carved as stylised human faces. The warm yellow-brown stone is decorated with shallow incised scrollwork, its lightly polished surface revealing subtle natural colour variations and areas of age-related wear. The broad, open centre emphasises the striking curved silhouette, while the mask-like terminals give the traditional form a vivid anthropomorphic character. Huang plaques are among the classic ceremonial shapes in Chinese jade carving, connecting abstract geometry with complex symbolic traditions. This distinctive example brings together the sculptural power of an archaic jade form, fine linear ornament and engaging human imagery.
