BRONZE OILLAMP INDIA 18TH CENTURY ORISSA Dimensions: Height 10 cm Wide 9 cm Depth 11 cm Weight: 227 grams A lively bronze pedestal lamp with a shallow, elongated oil receptacle edged by small raised points and zoomorphic details. A bird-like finial rises above the dish, while the supporting structure incorporates an animal figure and a circular, moulded foot. Incised and cast ornament catches the light across the warm brown metal, with darker colour settled in the recesses. Oil lamps offered both practical illumination and an auspicious flame in Hindu worship. Birds and animals could lend these small implements an animated, symbolic character without obscuring their purpose. This example has the playful inventiveness of a miniature sculpture.
