A BUDDHIST GUARDIAN FIGURE PAINTING, CHINA, IN THE STYLE OF 10TH–12TH CENTURY Dimensions: 60 cm x 45 cm A Chinese Buddhist guardian painting executed in the style of the tenth to twelfth centuries, portraying a formidable protective figure in richly coloured armour and flowing ceremonial garments. The guardian stands in a commanding pose with attributes raised against an aged pale background, while red, green, ochre and blue pigments define the layered costume, expressive face and swirling ribbons. The surviving areas of colour are especially vivid against the weathered surface, with visible wear and losses adding to the historical character of the image. Guardian figures were an essential part of Buddhist temple imagery, symbolising protection of the Dharma. The dynamic posture and elaborate armour give this painting a strong dramatic presence.
