A VERY EARLY TIBETAN TOKCHA 12TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 3,5 cm Wide 2,5 cm Depth 0,5 cm Weight: 16,6 grams A small cast metal object with an irregular openwork silhouette, showing a compact human-like figure with projecting arms and one leg extended across a narrow lower bar. The heavily weathered surface has dark brown, reddish and greenish areas of corrosion, which partly obscure the original modelling. Its flattened form and modest dimensions give it the character of a portable ornament or amulet. Objects commonly described as thokcha or tokcha occupy a distinctive place in Tibetan material culture, where old metal pieces may be kept and worn for their protective associations. The present example's precise figure and original function remain difficult to identify because of its worn condition.
