A CHINESE TANG SANCAI PARROT EVER Dimensions: Height 20,5 cm Wide 7 cm Depth 8 cm Weight: 493,7 grams A brightly glazed bird-shaped ewer, its elongated body rising from a small foot to a stylised head with projecting beak. A curved handle arches behind the neck, while layered feather-like ornament and patches of blue, amber and pale glaze animate the surface. The narrow upright form gives the vessel a striking silhouette, poised between functional container and sculptural representation. Bird-shaped vessels belong to a long tradition of playful zoomorphic design in Chinese ceramics. The contrasting glaze colours create movement across the body and reinforce the suggestion of plumage.
