SMALL BLUE AND WHITE BOWL WITH FLORAL SCROLL DECORATION, CHENGHUA PERIOD OF THE MING DYNASTY Dimensions: Height 4,5 cm Wide 8,4 cm Depth 8,4 cm Weight: 68 grams A delicately potted small porcelain bowl painted in underglaze cobalt blue with scrolling floral decoration arranged around the exterior. Slender stems and stylised blossoms follow the curvature of the vessel, framed by fine blue lines at the rim and foot. The white porcelain ground and restrained scale give the decoration a light, precise character. Blue-and-white porcelain reached a remarkable degree of refinement during the Ming dynasty, and small vessels of the Chenghua period are particularly admired for balanced proportions and softly controlled cobalt painting. Floral scrolls were ideally suited to rounded forms, their continuous growth suggesting both natural abundance and auspicious continuity. The bowl's appeal lies in its economy. Rather than relying on dense ornament, the painter allows the white ground to participate in the composition, giving the floral motifs space to breathe and reinforcing the elegant profile of the vessel.
