(R) A GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA ON A LATER INSCRIBED BASE, THAILAND AYUTTHYA (1600 - 1650) Dimensions: Height 48 cm Wide 27 cm Depth 20 cm Weight: 11.600 grams A seated Buddha is represented in a composed frontal pose, with the right hand lowered towards the knee in the earth-touching gesture and the left resting in the lap. The figure has an elongated, pointed ushnisha, long earlobes and a serene face, while a diagonal fold crosses the torso. Traces of gilding brighten the upper body against the darker surface of the arms and lower section. The earth-touching gesture recalls the moment when the historical Buddha called the earth to witness his enlightenment. The contrast between the luminous figure and its darker support gives the devotional image a particularly clear silhouette.
