SEATED BRONZE SHRI DEVI INDIA 16TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 25 cm Wide 15 cm Depth 14 cm Weight: 5068 grams A commanding bronze goddess seated in a relaxed royal pose on a substantial lotus-shaped throne. One leg folds across the seat while the other descends over the front of the pedestal, giving the composition a pleasing diagonal movement. She wears a tall conical crown, circular earrings, layered necklaces and a finely patterned lower garment. One palm opens outward in a gesture of generosity, while the raised hand holds a short upright attribute. The smooth, dark brown metal is punctuated by crisp incised details in the jewellery and dress. In an Indian Vaishnava context, Sri or Shri Devi is closely associated with Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, auspiciousness and royal fortune. The regal adornment and composed posture are consistent with this benevolent visual tradition. This substantial casting is particularly notable for the clarity of its silhouette and the contrast between the serene upper body and richly articulated throne.
