STANDING BRONZE HANUMAN INDIA 15TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 8,4 cm Wide 3,5 cm Depth 3,5 cm Weight: 164 grams A finely cast bronze figure of Hanuman standing with his hands joined before the chest in anjali mudra. The monkey-faced devotee wears a short dhoti, girdle and jewellery, while his characteristic tail rises behind the head in a graceful arc. Traces of gilding survive on the face, limbs and ornaments against a rich reddish-brown patina, together with remnants of red devotional pigment. Hanuman is celebrated in the Ramayana as the devoted servant of Rama and embodies loyalty, courage, strength and unwavering bhakti. The gesture of joined hands emphasises this devotional aspect rather than his martial exploits, presenting him as the ideal worshipper. The narrow upright format and restrained stance give the small bronze a concentrated presence. Evidence of repeated ritual handling enhances its character as an object made not simply for display but for active devotional use.
