A LARGE SEATED BURMESE BRONZE BUDDHA 18TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 37 cm Wide 22 cm Depth 17 cm Weight: 5178 grams A substantial seated bronze Buddha modelled cross-legged upon a richly tiered lotus pedestal. The right hand is lowered towards the knee in the earth-touching gesture, while the left rests in the lap. The robe follows the shoulder and chest in a restrained diagonal fold, allowing the balanced proportions of the torso to remain visible. An elongated face, downward-looking eyes and a tall finial rising above the tightly worked hair contribute to the image's meditative expression. Several registers of lotus petals and decorative borders give the base considerable visual weight. The bronze has a dark, mottled surface with warm rubbed passages along the face, arms and pedestal.
