(R) TWO CHINES BRONZE LOHAN, CHINA, MING DYNASTY, 16TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 35,5 cm Wide 36 cm Depth 11 cm Weight: 2.900 grams both A pair of expressive Chinese Ming-dynasty bronze lohan dating to the sixteenth century, each standing upon a separate fitted wooden base. The two enlightened disciples of the Buddha are conceived as contrasting personalities: one with a fuller body and genial presence, the other leaner and more animated. Deeply folded robes, individually modelled features and lively hand gestures make each figure distinct, while dark bronze patinas and traces of reddish surface colouring unite the ensemble. In Chinese Buddhist sculpture, the lohan or arhat embodies spiritual attainment but is often portrayed with vivid, recognisably human character. Displayed together, these two bronzes offer an engaging combination of devotional symbolism and expressive Ming-period figural craftsmanship. For lots marked with (R), a 19% VAT is added to the combined hammer price and commission. This VAT is waived for: - Private buyers outside the EU who officially export the items.- Businesses inside the EU holding a valid VAT number, exporting to their home country.
