A FINE YELLOW-GROUND PORCELAIN CUP, CHINA QING DYNASTY, WITH YONGZHENG MARK AND Dimensions: Height 5 cm Wide 7 cm Depth 7 cm Weight: 58 grams A finely potted Chinese porcelain cup with a bright yellow exterior ground, decorated in grisaille and restrained enamels with flowering plants and a bird in flight. The flared sides rise from a short foot to a delicately shaped rim, while the white interior provides a crisp contrast to the saturated yellow ground. A short inscription and red seals form part of the painted composition. Yellow-ground wares occupied a distinguished place in Qing porcelain, the colour carrying strong imperial associations while also providing an effective field for increasingly sophisticated enamel decoration. The combination of monochrome ground, painterly blossoms and calligraphic elements reflects the close dialogue between porcelain decoration and the aesthetics of Chinese painting.
