(R) A RARE SCALE, CHINA, 1800 Dimensions: Height 20 cm Wide 56,5 cm Depth 26 cm Weight: 10.228 grams A rare Chinese balance scale dating to around 1800, comprising an elegantly proportioned brass beam, upright support and two suspended weighing pans mounted above a fitted hardwood storage case. The box is fitted with drawers, brass corner mounts, decorative handles and a lock plate, combining the weighing mechanism with its original storage furniture. The warm brass and richly toned timber create a pleasing contrast between the delicate balance apparatus and solid rectangular base. Traditional Chinese scales were indispensable in trade, especially for weighing silver and precious commodities. The combination of precision instrument, finely crafted case and historical patina makes this an exceptional piece of Chinese commercial and scientific material culture. For lots marked with (R), a 19% VAT is added to the combined hammer price and commission. This VAT is waived for: - Private buyers outside the EU who officially export the items.- Businesses inside the EU holding a valid VAT number, exporting to their home country.
