A CHINESE SEATED BRONZE FIGURE OF GUAN YU, MING DYNASTY Dimensions: Height 27 cm Wide 18 cm Depth 12 cm Weight: 3245 grams A substantial bronze figure of Guan Yu seated frontally on a low plinth, his upright posture conveying authority and composure. The deity is represented with a stern, concentrated expression, long flowing beard and official headdress. Layered robes and armour cover the body, with geometric and textile details remaining visible across the chest and sleeves; one hand is raised while the other rests at the knee. Guan Yu, the historical general later deified as a guardian of loyalty, righteousness and martial virtue, became one of the most widely venerated figures in Chinese popular and official religion. Ming images often emphasise not violent action but controlled moral authority, presenting him enthroned or seated as a dignified protector. The figure is hollow cast and carries a dark, compact patina with areas of wear and lighter accretion. Its frontal symmetry, weighty proportions and carefully modelled beard give the bronze a strong devotional presence suited to a temple or domestic shrine.
