INDIAN TANTRIC PAINTING DEPICTING GANESHA 19TH CENTURY FRAMED Dimensions: Height 24 x 16 cm Weight: 1452 grams Ink and pigments on paper, depicting the elephant-headed deity Ganesha standing frontally and holding his characteristic attributes. The figure is covered with sacred syllables, mantras, magical diagrams (yantras) and numerical squares associated with tantric ritual practice. Ganesha holds a bowl of sweets (modaka) and ritual implements, while esoteric inscriptions cover the body and surrounding field. Mounted and framed. Historical Background This unusual image belongs to the tradition of tantric and magical diagrams used in Hindu ritual practice throughout India during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Unlike conventional devotional paintings intended primarily for worship, such works functioned as ritual tools believed to embody spiritual power through the combination of sacred imagery, mantras, seed syllables (bija), numerical formulas and geometric yantras. Ganesha occupies a central place within tantric traditions as the remover of obstacles, lord of wisdom and guardian of sacred knowledge. In many regional tantric systems he was invoked at the beginning of rituals to ensure success, protection and prosperity. The numerous inscriptions covering the deity's body transform the image itself into a living talisman, with each mantra and diagram contributing to its ritual efficacy. The numerical squares visible throughout the composition belong to a broader South Asian tradition of magical charts associated with astrology, protection, healing and the attainment of worldly success. Such paintings were often commissioned by priests, tantric practitioners or wealthy patrons and were kept in temples, household shrines or ritual manuscripts. Their combination of folk, tantric and devotional elements reflects a rich esoteric tradition that flourished throughout northern and eastern India during the nineteenth century.
