(R) A BIG IMARI PLATE, CHINA 18TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 5,5 cm Diameter 47,5 cm Weight: 2855 grams A large circular porcelain dish with a gently rising wall, its broad interior painted with scrolling sprays of chrysanthemums and other flowering plants. Cobalt-blue leaves and blossoms alternate with iron-red and orange flowers, some picked out with fine gilded lines. At the centre, a small lobed medallion contains alternating geometric and foliate patterns, giving the freely spreading floral design a firm decorative focus. The palette and arrangement reflect the Chinese interpretation of the Imari decorative taste, which combined underglaze blue with overglaze red and gilding. Across the broad surface, the painter varies the scale and orientation of the flowers so that the design feels continuous rather than mechanically repeated. The pale ground allows each coloured element to remain distinct. The dish's generous diameter makes the ornament especially effective, inviting the eye to move from the concentrated central roundel to the expansive ring of flowering branches. The contrast between strong blue outlines and warm red highlights gives the surface a lively, balanced character.
