(R) A PAIR OF CHINESE DOUCAI PORCELAINE JARS AND COVERS, CHINA 19TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 44 cm Wide 27 cm Depth 27 cm each Weight: 10.220 grams both A matched pair of covered porcelain jars rises from gently spreading feet to rounded shoulders and short necks, each surmounted by a domed lid with a small knop. Their white grounds are filled with brightly coloured auspicious emblems, precious objects and stylised floral motifs, outlined in blue and enlivened by pink, green, yellow and turquoise enamels. Bands of repeated ornament around the foot, shoulder and cover provide a lively framework for the more freely spaced designs on the bodies. Chinese decorative traditions frequently assembled symbolic objects into rich visual programmes associated with good fortune, cultured pursuits and celebration. On these jars the accumulation of motifs becomes a decorative language in its own right, rewarding attention to individual details as well as the overall symmetry of the pair. Their generous proportions and close correspondence give the two vessels a strong presence when displayed together. For lots marked with (R), a 19% VAT is added to the combined hammer price and commission. This VAT is waived for: - Private buyers outside the EU who officially export the items.- Businesses inside the EU holding a valid VAT number, exporting to their home country. Proper export documentation is required to waive the VAT
