A GILT BRONZE BIANZHONG CHINA Dimensions: Height 16 cm Wide 12 cm Depth 12 cm Weight: 2409 grams A richly ornamented gilt-metal bell of cylindrical, tapering form, crowned by a sculptural suspension fitting. Raised bands divide the surface into registers filled with dense relief ornament, including scrolling forms and projecting motifs, while the lower edge broadens into a rounded, patterned border. The gilded finish catches strongly on the high points of the decoration, setting them against darker recesses and giving the compact object considerable visual depth. The bianzhong bell reflects China's distinguished tradition of ceremonial music. Bronze bells played an important role in ritual and courtly ensembles, where sound, rank and formal display were closely connected.
