PAIR OF CALLIGRAPHIC COUPLETS , SHI YUN YU (1756-1837) A pair of vertical Chinese calligraphic couplets is written in bold black ink on warm, gold-flecked paper. Each hanging scroll carries a column of large characters, their firm strokes alternating between dense ink passages and more open spaces. A smaller inscription and red seal marks appear beside the principal text, lending a personal finish to the otherwise carefully balanced arrangement. Paired calligraphic scrolls occupy an important place in Chinese scholarly interiors, where poetry, brushwork and the character of the written line are appreciated together. The contrast between the expressive black characters and softly speckled paper gives these works an understated decorative presence.
