(R) A PAINTED EARTHENWARE TRIPOD VESSEL , CHINA HAN DYNASTY (206 BC – 220 AD) Dimensions: Height 16 cm Wide 24 cm Depth 20 cm Weight: 1753 grams A rounded tripod vessel with a close-fitting domed cover and two upright handles rising from opposite sides of the body. Three short legs lift the deep bowl above the ground, while traces of painted decoration remain across the exterior. Broad, pale bands encircle the lid and shoulder; reddish oval and curling motifs emerge from the worn ochre, white and dark pigments on the body. The cover retains a bold concentric design, its subdued colours revealing the texture of the earthenware beneath. The form recalls the ancient Chinese ding, a vessel type closely associated with ritual food offerings. Ceramic versions adapted the commanding profile of bronze prototypes for funerary and other ceremonial contexts, where familiar forms could express continuity with older practices. The painted ornament introduces an additional visual layer, contrasting with the solidity of the tripod construction. Wear, losses to the painted surface and irregularities along the edges make the history of the object's handling visible. Its appeal lies in the powerful, almost sculptural simplicity of the vessel's outline and the surviving traces of colour.
