A PAINTING DEPICTING SNOWY MOUNTAINS WITH PAVILIONS AND PINES - PU RU (1896-1963), CHINA Dimensions: 94 cm x 21 cm An elongated Chinese landscape painting in ink and light colour, unfolding through a succession of mountain forms, stands of pine and small architectural details. Pale, open passages suggest snow-covered slopes and winter light, while fine dark lines pick out trees, rocks and the edges of distant pavilions. The broad horizontal movement of the composition is punctuated by closely worked groups of forms, giving the eye alternating moments of detail and repose. Its winter subject belongs to a long pictorial tradition in which secluded buildings and mountain paths evoke scholarly retreat and contemplation. The measured alternation of blank and painted areas is central to the work's atmosphere.
