(R) BUDDHA VAIROCANA WOOD GILT JAPAN LATE EDO-PERIOD 1780 - 1820'S Dimensions: Height 46 cm Wide 25 cm Depth 15 cm Weight: 1290 grams A richly gilded Japanese wooden image of Buddha Vairocana dating to the late Edo period, circa 1780–1820. The Buddha is seated in meditation above an elaborate tiered lotus pedestal, framed by a towering openwork mandorla of scrolling cloud and flame-like forms. The hands meet before the chest in a symbolic teaching gesture, while the serene face and finely worked monastic garments communicate spiritual stillness. Warm gilding catches the light across the raised details, contrasting with darker passages where the lacquered surface has aged. Vairocana, the cosmic Buddha, holds an especially important place in Japanese esoteric Buddhism. This finely articulated sculpture combines strong devotional presence with the brilliant decorative character of Edo-period Buddhist altar art.
