SHEN QUAN (1682 – c. 1760) Dimensions: 144 x 86 cm A large hanging scroll of birds and flowers, densely composed with pine, flowering branches, wisteria, peonies and numerous birds arranged across the pictorial field. Cranes, ducks and smaller birds are rendered with close attention to plumage and posture, while the plants are differentiated through controlled line, colour and layered washes. The richly patterned mounting reinforces the decorative scale of the work. Visually, the work belongs to the refined bird-and-flower tradition in which careful observation and ornamental abundance are balanced within a highly structured composition; the variety of species and blossoms creates a continuous rhythm from the lower foreground to the upper branches.
