VAJRA BRONZE PROBABLY CHINESE , WESTERN XIA DYNASTY Dimensions: Height 6 cm Wide 24 cm Depth 6 cm Weight: 566 grams A double-ended bronze vajra, or ritual thunderbolt, with symmetrical openwork prongs extending from either end of a central grip. The projecting elements curve inwards around the axial points, forming balanced cage-like terminals. The short middle section is articulated with raised collars and closely spaced mouldings, giving the implement a clear rhythm of rounded and angular forms. The metal surface shows reddish-brown and darker areas, with lighter highlights where the relief has been rubbed. The vajra is a fundamental ritual implement in Vajrayana Buddhism, symbolising the indestructible nature of enlightened awareness and commonly used together with a bell. This example has an unusually elongated horizontal form.
