A CHINESE SCROLL PAINTING WORHSIPPING THE BUDDHA, CHINA 18TH CENTURY Dimensions: 127 cm x 60 cm An eighteenth-century Chinese Buddhist hanging scroll depicting a radiant sacred figure accompanied by attendants in an elaborate devotional composition. The principal personage stands or sits beneath a towering ornamental canopy, with a circular halo framing the head and richly patterned robes flowing around the body. Delicate greens, red, ochre and pale gold tones shine against the dark ground, while the narrower vertical format heightens the solemn atmosphere. Chinese Buddhist religious paintings traditionally unite sacred portraiture, symbolic costume and finely differentiated ornamental detail. The contrast between luminous garments and sombre background, together with the carefully arranged accompanying figures, gives this scroll a particularly evocative spiritual presence.
