IMPORTANT WOOD AND BONE CARVING DEPICTING SURYA ON CARRIAGE Dimensions: Height 85 cm Wide 78 cm Depth 8 cm Weight: 9.5 Kilograms A large carved wooden devotional panel depicts Surya, the Hindu sun god, within an arched architectural frame. The front incorporates an elaborate lattice of repeated floral and geometric compartments surrounding a centrally placed sacred figure. Further carved figures, animals and ornamental details appear within the richly worked architectural structure, while the reverse or additional view reveals an animated figurative relief with several attendants arranged around a principal deity. The various levels of carving create pronounced contrasts between open recesses and projecting surfaces. The warm, worn wood retains areas of darker patination and visible abrasion along the edges and high points. The visible carving is best described as a complex architectural shrine panel.
