BRONZE OILLAMP INDIA 18TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 14 cm Wide 11 cm Depth 13 cm Weight: 353 grams A slender pedestal oil lamp with an elongated shallow basin, raised wick points and a bird-shaped finial lifting its head above the rim. Small pendant elements hang from the outer edge, adding movement to the horizontal composition. The stem rises from a broad, ring-moulded foot, its dark bronze surface showing rubbed highlights and scattered greenish oxidation. Birds frequently appear in Indian decorative and devotional metalwork, their graceful silhouettes lending vitality to otherwise utilitarian forms. Lamps of this type belong to the longstanding practice of presenting light in domestic shrines and temples, where the flame signifies auspiciousness and spiritual clarity. The poised bird and suspended details give the vessel a distinctive sense of animation.
