(R) A SANDSTONE BUDDHA HEAD, KHMER, LOPBURI 13TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 26 cm Wide 16 cm Depth 20 cm Weight: 13.151 grams with base A sandstone sculpted Buddha head with a broad, serene face, closed eyes and a faint smile. The gently arched brows meet above a straight nose, while the rounded cheeks and softly defined lips give the face a tranquil, inward-looking expression. Closely worked hair curls remain visible along the upper sides, and the neck terminates in an irregular break where the head was once joined to a larger image. In the sculptural traditions of mainland Southeast Asia, the Buddha's calm expression and balanced facial proportions were central to conveying spiritual composure. The present fragment preserves that expressive core, allowing the viewer to focus on the transition between the smooth planes of the face and the textured hair. A fine horizontal crack crosses the area of the eyes, and the sandy surface bears wear and small deposits. For lots marked with (R), a 19% VAT is added to the combined hammer price and commission.
