FAMILLE ROSE VASE WITH THE EIGHT DAOIST IMMORTALS, QIANLONG SEAL MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1736–1795) Dimensions: Height 29,3 cm Wide 10,3 cm Depth 10,3 cm Weight: 829 grams A slender famille rose porcelain vase with a waisted neck and flared mouth, painted with the Eight Daoist Immortals arranged around the body in a continuous figural scene. Each figure is distinguished by characteristic dress and attributes, their brightly coloured robes standing out against the pale porcelain ground. Applied handles at the neck add a sculptural accent to the otherwise pictorial surface. The Eight Immortals are among the most enduring auspicious subjects in Chinese art. Representing different ages and social identities, they are associated collectively with longevity, transcendence and good fortune. Their individual attributes allowed viewers to recognise each immortal while also enjoying the group as a lively narrative procession. A six-character Qianlong seal mark is stated on the base. The tall proportions give the figures room to unfold vertically around the vessel, while the famille rose palette provides the nuanced colour and shading needed to distinguish faces, garments and attributes with courtly refinement.
