(R) A SEATED BRONZE WARRIOR ZHENWU, CHINA MING DYNASTY (1364-1644) Dimensions: Height 26 cm Wide 24 cm Depth 15 cm Weight: 8056 grams with wood base A substantial bronze image of Zhenwu seated in commanding repose, dressed in layered robes over richly detailed armour. His broad body is balanced by a calm, authoritative face framed by long hair, while the garments and breastplate are worked with dense ornamental detail. A coiling dragon enlivens the lap, and traces of lacquer and gilding remain against the dark, mature patina of the bronze. Zhenwu, the Perfected Warrior, became one of the most important protective deities of Daoism and enjoyed exceptional imperial patronage during the Ming dynasty. Associated with the north, martial protection and the sacred Wudang Mountains, he is often represented not in active combat but in a state of controlled power: a warrior whose authority is spiritual as much as physical. That dual character is particularly successful here. Armour and dragon imagery establish martial strength, yet the seated pose and composed expression suppress any sense of aggression. The heavy casting, broad silhouette and layered surface decoration give the figure a monumental presence far beyond its scale.
