LADY BENEATH A WILLOW TREE, CHINA , BAO DONG (1800-1870) Dimensions: 136 cm x 33 cm A slender hanging scroll presents a solitary woman beside an old willow, its gnarled trunk rising through the composition before opening into long, finely brushed sprays of foliage. The figure stands with her head slightly lowered, her pale robes outlined in supple ink strokes and accented by touches of blue. Rockwork and a few small plants anchor the foreground, while an inscription and two red seals occupy the upper right. The scene draws on the Chinese tradition of paintings of elegant women, or meiren, in which gesture and setting convey a mood of reflection rather than a dramatic narrative. The drooping willow branches echo the figure's quiet pose and lend the open space around her a gentle rhythm. A restrained palette allows the ink drawing to remain the principal means of expression. The scroll's appeal rests in its assured contrast between the vigorous, weathered tree and the delicacy of the figure beneath it.
