STANDING BRONZE HANUMAN INDIA 17TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 8 cm Wide 3,5 cm Depth 3,5 cm Weight: 140 grams A charmingly compact bronze image of Hanuman standing erect on a lotus-form pedestal above a square plinth. The monkey-faced deity presses his palms together at chest height in anjali mudra, the gesture of reverence. He wears a high headdress, earrings and a short patterned garment, while a long tail curves behind his shoulders to form a distinctive outline. The softly polished high points of the dark bronze contrast with deeper patination in the folds and recesses, emphasizing the sculptor's economical but expressive modelling. Hanuman is celebrated in the Ramayana for his extraordinary strength, loyalty and unwavering devotion to Rama. Although he is often shown in feats of heroic action, the joined hands here stress his humility and dedication rather than martial power. This devotional attitude is central to his religious significance: Hanuman embodies courage exercised in selfless service. The small image translates an epic figure into a form suited to close and repeated contemplation.
