QI BAISHI (1864-1957) Dimensions: 39 cm x 68 cm A very narrow hanging scroll centred on a vertical strip of calligraphy, with the inscription presented against a subdued textile mounting. The brushwork is compact and controlled, and the small format concentrates attention on the rhythm of the written characters rather than pictorial imagery. Qi Baishi is celebrated for the expressive economy of both his painting and calligraphy; here the visual effect depends almost entirely on brush pressure, spacing and the contrast between dark ink and the lightly toned support.
