SEATED BRONZE GANESHA INDIA 18TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 7 cm Wide 4 cm Depth 3 cm Weight: 136 grams A small bronze figure of Ganesha seated beneath an architectural arch on a stepped base. The elephant-headed god is shown with four arms, a rounded belly and a curved trunk crossing the torso, while a conical crown and simple ornaments give definition to the compact figure. The warm brown surface is interrupted by areas of green oxidation and devotional wear. Ganesha's role as remover of obstacles and bestower of wisdom and good fortune made him especially suitable for household worship. Portable images of this scale could be placed in a domestic shrine and handled during regular ritual practice. The shrine-like frame gives the diminutive bronze a complete architectural setting, concentrating attention on the deity. Its softened details and aged surface contribute to the intimate character of an object intended for close devotional use.
