(R) JAPANESE WOOD PRINT DEPICTING A KOI ; WITH 2 RED SEALS 19TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 22,5 cm Wide 26,5 cm (only painting) Weight: 1268 grams with frame A Japanese composition devoted to a single carp moving horizontally across an almost empty field. Deep washes define the rounded head and large, alert eye, while fine, repeated strokes suggest the overlapping scales and the translucent movement of the fins. The tail dissolves into lighter, brisker marks, giving the fish a convincing sense of motion. Two red seals stand to the right, and a short printed inscription appears along the lower margin. The carp is a familiar subject in East Asian art, admired both for its graceful movement through water and for associations with perseverance. Here the economy of the monochrome handling is especially effective: the unworked paper becomes the surrounding water, and the changing density of ink gives volume to the body. For lots marked with (R), a 19% VAT is added to the combined hammer price and commission. This VAT is waived for: - Private buyers outside the EU who officially export the items.- Businesses inside the EU holding a valid VAT number, exporting to their home country.
