(R) A SEATED COLD GILT BRONZE BUDDHA, THAILAND, 19TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 108 cm Wide 69 cm Depth 42 cm Weight: 80,8 Kilograms A large seated Buddha with a slender, upright torso and a composed face framed by elongated earlobes and a tall, flame-like finial. The right hand reaches towards the ground in the earth-touching gesture, while the left rests quietly in the lap. A smooth robe falls diagonally across the body, leaving one shoulder exposed, and the figure is elevated on a broad, tiered lotus pedestal with contrasting warm gilded and darker surfaces. The earth-touching gesture recalls the moment when the historical Buddha called the earth to witness his awakening. In Thai Buddhist sculpture this decisive narrative event is expressed through an image of profound stillness: the strong vertical axis of the head and torso is balanced by the wide, stable base and the folded legs. Here the restrained modelling of the body, the carefully ordered pedestal and the surviving gilded finish give the figure an imposing yet contemplative presence.
