(R) A DEHUA BLANC DE CHINA GUANYIN, CHINA, 19TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 32,5 cm Wide 14 cm Depth 9 cm Weight: 1298 grams A finely modelled Dehua porcelain figure of Guanyin, seated in a relaxed pose above swirling waves and accompanied by a small acolyte. Long robes fall in fluid folds around the body, while beaded jewellery and strands of hair provide delicate linear detail. The creamy ivory-white glaze pools subtly in the deeper recesses, accentuating the modelling without the need for painted colour. Dehua kilns in Fujian became celebrated for precisely this luminous white porcelain, known in Europe as blanc de Chine. Guanyin was one of the great subjects of the tradition: the bodhisattva's calm expression, flowing garments and compassionate identity were ideally suited to the soft modelling and warm white glaze achieved by Dehua potters. The sculpture combines devotional meaning with a strong sense of material refinement. Guanyin's quiet composure is enlivened by the movement of the waves and the presence of the attendant, while the monochrome surface allows light and shadow to articulate every fold and contour.
