A SEATED BRONZE AVALOKITESHVARA TIBET 18TH CENTURY OR EARLIER OR LATER Dimensions: Height 25 cm Wide 16 cm Depth 14 cm Weight: 2395 grams An eighteenth-century Tibetan bronze of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, seated in an elegant, relaxed posture upon a richly worked lotus pedestal. The princely figure wears an elaborate crown, necklaces, bracelets and flowing scarves, with one arm raised and the other poised close to the body. Warm brown bronze, darker recesses and greenish surface accretions enrich the carefully cast modelling. Avalokiteshvara occupies a central place in Himalayan Buddhist devotion, embodying universal compassion and benevolence. The broad lotus base and gently animated pose create a harmonious balance between sculptural strength and refined ornament, making this a compelling Tibetan devotional bronze.
