(R) A CHINESE ADORANT, LIMESTONE, SUNG DYNASTY, 12TH TO 13TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 37 cm Wide 15 cm Depth 8 cm Weight: 3531 grams A carved limestone attendant standing upon a low rocky support, the body inclined slightly forward as both hands present a small bowl. The youthful face has lowered eyes and a composed expression, with the hair drawn back and a long lock falling beside the shoulder. Broad sleeves curve around the offering, while the layered robes descend in crisp folds over the legs. A patterned sash gathers the garment at the waist, introducing a delicate surface rhythm to the otherwise restrained modelling. Figures presenting offerings appear throughout Chinese Buddhist sculpture, where their gestures of service and reverence help define the sacred space around a principal image. The modest scale of the bowl and the careful inclination of the upper body make the act of offering the emotional centre of this work. The figure's quiet expression, fluid drapery and carefully poised hands nevertheless give it an engaging devotional character.
