A CHINESE MEI VASE JUN KILN Dimensions: Height 20 cm Wide 11 cm Depth 11 cm Weight: 609 grams A tall, softly shouldered vase tapering toward a narrow foot and rising to a short neck with an everted lip. The surface is enveloped in a mottled sky-blue glaze, enlivened by scattered darker flecks and irregular vertical marks. Around the foot a narrow band of pale, unglazed ceramic remains visible, sharply defining the transition between the glazed body and the base. The unadorned profile allows the glaze's delicate variations to become the principal feature. Jun-type ceramics are celebrated for their expressive glazes, in which colour, texture and the effects of the kiln create visual interest without the need for painted decoration. The blue surface of this vase has a gently clouded quality, its small imperfections and darker marks contributing to the sense of movement across the rounded body. Its strength lies in the combination of a simple silhouette and a richly varied monochrome finish.
