241 - A HETIAN JADE CARVED BEAST CHINA

A HETIAN JADE CARVED BEAST CHINA Dimensions: Height 1,5 cm Wide 4 cm Depth 5 cm Weight: 52 grams A smoothly carved pale green beast reclining on its side, with a rounded body, tucked limbs and an expressive head turned toward the viewer. Broad, gently swelling surfaces alternate with fine incised details at the eyes, mouth and paws. Brownish inclusions and darker areas follow the curves of the polished surface, adding warmth to the translucent green tone. Animal carvings are a longstanding subject in Chinese jade work, where compact forms can combine playful character with careful attention to the natural qualities of the stone. This creature's low, curled posture gives it a restful appearance, while the slightly lifted head introduces alertness. The restrained carving makes the most of the material's changing colour and the continuity of its polished contours.
