WU HUFAN (1894–1968) Dimensions: 86 cm x 17 cm A pair of narrow calligraphic panels mounted side by side as hanging scrolls, each bearing a vertical sequence of large characters brushed in dark ink. The strokes alternate between decisive, angular turns and more fluid, tapering movements, while generous spaces between the characters give the composition an assured, unhurried cadence. Smaller inscriptions and a red seal add accents near the lower and middle portions of the panels. Paired calligraphic scrolls occupy a distinguished place in Chinese literati interiors, where the visual balance of corresponding columns is as important as the verbal content. Here the strong black brushwork stands out against warm-toned paper and pale mounting fabric.
