STANDING BRONZE HANUMAN IN ANJALI MUDRA INDIA, 16TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 24 cm Wide 10 cm Depth 8,5 cm Weight: 2.307 grams A finely cast Indian bronze figure of Hanuman standing erect on a lotus pedestal with both hands joined before the chest in anjali mudra. The monkey-faced deity is richly adorned with jewellery and a patterned dhoti, while curling elements frame the body and enliven the silhouette. The upright stance and symmetrical gesture create a markedly devotional rather than martial image. Hanuman, the faithful companion of Rama in the Ramayana, personifies courage, loyalty and absolute devotion. Images showing him with joined hands emphasise this last quality: physical strength is deliberately subordinated to reverence, presenting Hanuman as the exemplary devotee before his lord. The sculpture combines a compact, powerful body with carefully chased ornamental detail. Surface wear, oxidation and accretions contribute to the aged appearance of the bronze, while the lotus base anchors the figure as an independent image intended for worship.
