(R) A SMALL RUOHAN VASE, FAMILLE VERTE / FAMILLE NOIRE, CHINA, 1800 Dimensions: Height 18 cm Wide 8 cm Depth 8 cm Weight: 319 grams A small Chinese porcelain vase decorated in the famille verte and famille noire palette, its compact form serving as a concentrated field for brightly coloured enamel decoration against dark passages. Greens, iron-reds and lighter enamel tones stand out sharply from the black ground, creating the strong graphic contrast that gives this decorative family its distinctive character. Famille verte decoration reached particular prominence in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, but its palette and motifs continued to be admired and revived in later Chinese porcelain. The use of a dark ground intensifies the enamel colours and gives even a small vessel considerable visual weight, turning floral and ornamental details into luminous accents.
