(R) A FINE BALUSTER VASE ;FAMILLE ROSE , CHINA, GUANGXU PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY Dimensions: Height 41,5 cm Wide 21 cm Depth 21 cm Weight: 2836 grams A tall baluster-shaped porcelain vase painted in a bright famille rose palette with a continuous scene of elegantly dressed figures in a rocky garden landscape. A principal female figure is accompanied by attendants among flowering plants, pine branches and stylised clouds, while a spotted deer introduces a further note of movement. The narrow neck and gently flaring mouth complete a graceful profile that allows the pictorial decoration to flow around the body. The source identifies the central subject as Xiwangmu, the Queen Mother of the West, whose mythical realm is associated with immortality and the peaches of longevity. Pine, deer and other auspicious motifs reinforce this theme, making the vessel's decoration more than a purely ornamental garden scene. The lively enamel colours, carefully differentiated garments and layered landscape elements reflect the enduring appeal of auspicious narrative subjects in Chinese porcelain painting.
