BUDDHA AMITHABA REPOUSSE TIBET 18TH CENTURY POSSIBLY DENSATIL STYLE Dimensions: Height 40 cm Wide 43 cm Depth 7 cm Weight: 2095 grams with base A large repoussé copper devotional panel centered by a serene Buddhist figure seated in vajrasana on a broad lotus throne and framed by a richly worked aureole. The deity is modeled with an idealized face, elongated eyes and a composed expression, while jewelry and crown-like adornment lend the image the appearance of a transcendent, richly ornamented manifestation. The surrounding mandorla is articulated with curling flame and cloud-like ornament, creating a strong sense of radiance around the central figure. The work belongs to the Tibetan tradition of repoussé metal sculpture, in which hammered copper allowed large sacred images and architectural ensembles to combine monumentality with comparatively light construction. The surviving gilding and pigment, together with devotional rubbing and age-related surface wear, give the panel a layered ritual character. Mounted on a later base; with cracking along the central seam and minor losses.
